This option is a largely independent academic research module resulting in the production of a large scale written piece. You will be supported by an academic supervisor through tutorial sessions throughout the year. In this module lectures and seminars will be dedicated to aspects of popular music research such as musicology, audience studies, anatoliabrookline.com performance studies, and/or cultural studies. You will work toward the submission of a focused piece of work examining a specific area of music. This module aims to introduce you to market research, branding, and use of video. The module utilises industry standard software to produce relevant promotional material for the popular musician.
This provides an introduction to the work of key bands and practitioners in popular music to provide a broad overview of the development of popular music and of the contexts that enable it to be understood and assessed. Small class sizes provide highly personalised levels of supervision and support. This will enable you to develop your own specialist practice you need for working within this dynamic sector. Develop an expertise in a business relevant to your musical interest and discover opportunities for industry based internships and graduate placements. Whether it be high-end digital or retro analogue, you will be able to produce and create a diverse range of professional sound recordings. You will explore the opportunities for enhanced communication within the formal performance context and use your own physical projection of self and personal narrative of intention.
Working alongside students from all areas will help you to hone your teamwork, time management and organisational skills, all key attributes that any employer is after. If you’re a keen performer, you’ll love working in our sprung-floor dance studios or rehearsing in our drama studios and fully-equipped theatre. Off-stage you will learn to work in professional setups, including our fully-rigged lighting rig and sound desk. Music students can take advantage of using our sound-proof rehearsal rooms, recording studios and editing suites. Our performing arts and music offer really is a step up from anything you will have experienced before! We’ve invested millions into our Hillsborough Campus, transforming it into our creative hub.

This cross-disciplinary programme is the first of its kind in Scotland, and RCS is the only UK conservatoire to offer a Master of Arts postgraduate degree in this rapidly growing area. It has been developed as a part-time, online blended learning programme to enable students from across the globe to study alongside professional commitments. Popular music at HCA is a vocational course designed for performers, songwriters and producers who wish to graduate with all the creative skills, knowledge and experience needed to have a successful career in the music industry. From mainstream to underground, this degree embraces music in its many forms – from rock, pop, folk, urban, jazz and to the experimental.
If you have a high level of performance skills you may be considered for a lower academic offer. Our BA Music with Arts Development degree offers you a course with a practical focus. You will develop your performance skills in singing and playing, alongside studying fundraising and the third sector as you broaden your knowledge of music and its many contexts.
