Harry Styles ‘signs five movie deal’ with Marvel Universe
Integrating them into your rewatch in timeline order helps to pad the story out still further. To see how each film leads to the next, watch them in the order of the MCU timeline, starting in 1942 with Steve Rogers first becoming Captain America. What with exploring the backgrounds of characters from decades ago, like Steve Rogers and Carol Danvers, the Marvel movies jump through time on several occasions. If you want an experience most similar to the original experience of watching the Marvel movies in cinemas, you’ll want to watch them in order of theatrical release.
The first three phases of the MCU introduced the Avengers gang and launched them into the Infinity Saga, and this way you’ll pick up all the nods, references and callbacks as they link through the series. Following the premiere of Eternals last autumn, it was leaked that Harry Styles made his MCU debut in the Marvel movie’s end credits scene as Eros aka Starfox. The brother of Thanos, a fellow Eternal, shared the moment with Angelina Jolie as he boarded her ship with Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswalt. Set in the summer of 2024, Far From Home takes place eight months after the final events of Endgame, with the blip and Tony Stark’s death still playing heavy on the world’s mind.
Seriously, though, I’ve always had a lot of time for Ultron. It’s partly because it’s the only MCU film where we see what an average day looked like for the team without a looming factory-publishing catastrophe they need to stop . As great as the first Avengers movie is, it can’t quite beat a talking racoon, a dancing pot plant and the best mixtape this side of Tarantino.
- Watiti also managed to tap into Chris Hemsworth’s natural comedic talents changing the character of Thor from a serious warrior type to a bizarre and pompous alien who’s completely out of his depth.
- The new 18-episode series will be released in Spring 2024, but not before Cox returns as Daredevil in She-Hulk.
- Its main problem is a deadly case of dreaded ‘prequelitis’ that saps it of any immediacy.
- Following Avengers Assemble was always going to be tricky, but Joss Whedon’s baggy sequel ended up falling into all the holes his first film managed to avoid.
The end of Tony Stark’s trilogy is contentious among the fanbase, but it’s a crucial piece of character work that separates Tony from the suit. Indeed, the guilt and resentment that would lead Tony astray in later movies is established, and we get some great action scenes besides. Marvel’s Phase 2 is often looked back on as the worst phase in Kevin Feige’s plan for multiplex domination. During this phase, the complaint that all superhero movies were the same was born, but it’s a really unfair reputation, in our opinion. Iron Man 3 is one of the films that best demonstrated how experimental the films in Marvel’s sophomore stage could be. Some people say Age of Ultron is the worst Avengers movie, and yeah – but in the words of my teenage brother, “shut up”.

Getting ’80s action movie star Kurt Russell to play Star Lord’s dad was a meta-masterstroke, and he clearly had a lot of fun with the part. Vol 2’s greatest weakness is that it never quite escapes the shadow of its predecessor. All that in mind, it’s a cinematic fact that adding Florence Pugh to your film adds instant value, and Yelena Belova is one of the best new additions to the MCU in some time.

Fun and surprisingly sweet , Ant-Man is unfairly criticised in some circles. While it’s got its weaknesses – most notably, it wastes Corey Stoll – Ant-Man manages to bring anarchic creativity to its action scenes. Unfairly maligned Thor is a fun action-comedy that makes the most of its fish out of water concept and delivers some fun world-building.
That was our first thought when Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings was announced but this really is a special Marvel movie. The first to kick off Phase 4 proper (Black Widow being a prequel doesn’t really count), Shang-Chi is a brilliant mix of martial arts and superheroes. The best compliment we can give is that it doesn’t feel like a Marvel movie until about two thirds in – the formula is fresh with this one.
